    NEOCARE 2K24

    NEOCARE 2k24, a state level workshop on ‘Essential Newborn Nursing’ was a two day participatory module based workshop of ENBC & FBNC modules organized by the IQAC and Dept. of Child Health Nursing, Pushpagiri College of Nursing, on 21st and 22nd February 2024 from 8am to 4.30pm at the College auditorium. The purpose of the workshop was to help participants gain the cognitive & psychomotor skills necessary for ensuring health survival of neonates. It was awarded 18 credit hours by the Kerala Nurses and Midwives Council and involved lectures, live/ video demonstrations, short tests and OSCE stations melded to provide a pragmatic understanding of various aspects of basic newborn nursing. It was conducted in partial fulfillment of the curricular requirements of the Vth Semester BSC nursing students and also as a part of 60th year celebrations (Pushpagiri completes 60 years of training nurses in 2024).  The workshop was in plan for about six months under the guidance & support of Rev. Fr. Aby Vadakkumthala, Director- Institutions & Patron of the workshop and Prof. Vineetha Jacob, Principal & Organizing Chairperson. Prof. Sr. Mary Jyothi was the Organizing Secretary and the Organizing Committee members were Mrs. Shibi Mariam Thomas, Associate Professor & HOD, Dept. of Nursing Foundations; Mrs. Roshin Siby (Assistant Professor), Mrs. Neethu Devan (Lecturer) & Mrs. Jyothi Vishnuthampi, (Tutor), Department of Child Health Nursing. The prepared brochure was sent to KNMC for sanction of credit hours and was circulated to all colleges about two months ago. The workshop was open to 100 participants, which included UG & PG nursing students, staff Nurses & interested faculty members. 97 participants including 75 Vth Semester BSc Nursing students and 22 faculty from various institutions within the state attended the same. The resource persons were – Dr. Jacob Abraham, Prof. & HOD, Dept. of Pediatrics, PIMS & RC and the faculty of Pushpagiri College of Nursing (as detailed in the brochure). Dr. Jacob was assisted by his Medical Officers- Dr. Angela George, Dr. Bincy Philip & Dr. Bincy Varghese. The workshop covered various topics namely- Basic needs, at birth as well as routine care & monitoring of the newborn; Thermoregulation, Kangaroo mother care, Feeding, Infection prevention, common newborn nursing procedures, care of at risk & sick neonates and Neonatal resuscitation. Following the main sessions, vote of thanks was proposed by Mrs. Roshin Siby. Prof. Mrs. Vineetha Jacob handed over the token of appreciation to the resource persons. And all joined for a photo session. Towards the end, few representatives of the participants gave a verbal feedback appreciating the overall conduct of the workshop. Almost all the participants gave a positive feedback through the feedback form circulated following the workshop. The feedback results are displayed in the following bar diagram. Overall, 68% of the participants reported that the workshop was excellent and 32% rated it as ‘good’. The most appreciated session was Dr. Jacob’s session on newborn resuscitation. The positive feedback received from participants further validates the quality and overall impact of the workshop. Following the feedback, certificates were distributed to all participants and the workshop came to an end by 4.30pm.
