    As the month of January is being celebrated as Thyroid Awareness Month we the Department of Medical Surgical Nursing is much delighted to share Awareness tips to charge your Thyroid gland for its effective functioning…..

     

    This series of Awareness tips will be titled.

    CARE THYROID – 2021

    CARE THYROID – 2021 TIP#1

                             CHECK YOUR NECK                                      

    1.Have a hand held mirror and a glass of water handy.

    2.Using the mirror focus on area below collar bone and above larynx (Location of Thyroid gland)

    3.While focusing on this area take a drink of some water and swallow.

    4.As you swallow, observe your neck for protrusions or enlargement. (don’t confuse with Adam’s apple….)

    5.If you see any  bulges consult a doctor. You  may have an enlarged thyroid gland or thyroid nodule.

                         WARNING SIGNS OF HYPOTHYROIDISM.

    1. Increased Appetite.
    2. Hair Loss.
    3. Slightly Increased Blood Pressure.
    4. Less Energy.
    5. Muscle spasm or pain.
    6. Increased Cholesterol.
    7. Increased Sleep.
    8. Slowing Of Heart Rate.
    9. Foggy Brain.
    10. Constipation.
    11. Irritability.
    12. Dry skin.

           SUBTLE SIGNS OF HYPERTHYROIDISM.

    1. Increased Sweating.
    2. Racing Heart.
    3. Hand Tremors.
    4. Irritability.
    5. Lack of Sleep.
    6. Numbness and Tingling.
    7. Increased Bowel Movements.
    8. Anxiety
    9. Muscle Weakness.
    10. Thinning of Skin.
    11. Fine Brittle Hair.

    KNOW YOUR HORMONES.                      

    Normal Levels of Thyroid hormones in blood:

    TSH: 0.4 – 4.0 mIU/L.

    T4 : 5 – 12 mcg/dl.

    T3 : 70 – 220 ng/dl.
